What does Toodyay mean?

The name Toodyay is derived from the Aboriginal name for the area “Duidgee” (pronounced Doo-gee).

Why did the town’s name change from Newcastle to Toodyay?

The town of Toodyay was gazetted in 1836 and was originally called Newcastle. By the early 1900’s, much of the town’s mail was being incorrectly delivered to Newcastle, NSW. One such item was an Ormolu Clock ordered by William Demasson. It sat unclaimed in NSW until John Forrest saw it had been mistakenly sent to the wrong Newcastle. This incident, among others, brought about the decision to change the town’s name and in 1910 when the town became known as Toodyay.

How far is Toodyay from Perth?

Toodyay is 86km North East of the Perth CBD and 67km from Midland. From Midland it is an easy scenic drive up Toodyay Road, passing farm land and natural bush. Toodyay is also an hour’s train ride from Midland.

Is there any public transport available in Toodyay?

Is there a best time of year to visit?

You can visit Toodyay all year round. The best time of year is July to October when the scenery is green and the wildflowers are in bloom. November to March can be a little warm so make sure you are prepared with a hat and water when visiting. April to June has the cooler weather to enjoy the many walk trails.
