The Shire is seeking an Environmental Health Officer passionate about protecting public health to join our close-knit team. This is a unique opportunity to diversify your career and make a real change in a community just outside the regular metro area, through a broad range of hands-on health work that’s different each day. Reporting to the Executive Manager Development and Regulation, our team is looking for a new member to deliver high quality environmental and public health services within the Shire of Toodyay.

The Shire of Toodyay is a beautiful semi-rural Shire on the Avon River in the Central Wheatbelt just outside of the metro region and 45 minutes from Midland. The Shire has experienced strong growth and development over the recent years with a thriving CBD, and active, engaged community.

What You'll Do:

  • Provide advice to the community, businesses, developers, and other staff.
  • Approve on-site wastewater systems and investigating sewage issues.
  • Register and inspect food businesses and addressing food safety issues.
  • Investigating odour, pest, health nuisances, and noise complaints
  • Assist the events working group in the approvals of public events.
  • Assist the Rangers in investigating animal and camping complaints.
  • Assist the Compliance Officer in investigating building health compliance.
  • Assist the Development Support Officer in land, building and settlement enquiries.
  • Field enquiries relating to health.

 

In addition to regulatory compliance, you'll work to promote good environmental and public health within the community and assist council in programs to improve the Shire of Toodyay Strategic Plan and Public Health Planning.

Applications are being sought for a part-time position; however full-time applications may be considered, especially for applicants with Planning and Building experience. Applicants will be asked to specify their desired weekly hours during the application process.

 Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Knowledge of statutory provisions relating to environmental health and public health
  • Sound knowledge and practical application of the Food Act 2008, Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911, Public Health Act 2016, and Environmental Protection Act 1986
  • Experience in conducting Environmental Health assessments and programs.
  • Experience assisting in policy review and public health program development.
  • Good research and reporting skills.
  • Work specific knowledge in the provision of environmental health advice.
  • Good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good ability to influence to gain cooperation and support and manage conflict constructively.
  • Good planning/organisational and teamwork skills including demonstrated ability to prioritise competing demands.
  • Ability to be authorised as an Authorised Person and Inspector under the Environmental Protection Act 1986.

 

An experienced Environmental Health Officer is desirable however not essential. The Shire provides the opportunity to grow within a supportive environment and enhance your skills, so new graduates are welcomed and will be supported by strong collaboration between the Wheatbelt and Avon Regional Organisation of Council’s Environmental Health Officers.

 

Qualifications / Licences / Clearances

  • Tertiary Degree or equivalent in Environmental Health that is compliant with Western Australian standards and permits the incumbent to undertake this role.
  • Current Australian Driver’s Licence
  • National Police Clearance
  • Working with Children Check
  • Pre-employment Medical
  • Evidence of a right to work in Australia.
