What to do if you see a snake

When warmer weather increases, snakes become more active as they leave their winter retreats in search of a mate and food. If you see a snake in the Shire at any time, do not approach or aggravate it. Most bites occur when people accidentally step on snakes or are attempting to kill them.

Remember, snakes are an integral part of the natural environment and play an important role in wildlife ecosystems.

The best action to take if you see a snake is to contact Shire Rangers or a volunteer snake handler (see list below), and keep an eye on the snake’s location so whoever is assisting you can remove and relocate it safely away from your property.

Reducing your risk

• Learn the correct treatment for snake bites (via St John First Aid information).
• Be aware and take care in bush land and grassy areas, especially in spring and summer.
• Walk and/or cycle in cleared areas only, where you can see the ground.
• Look ahead of where you are walking and avoid entering areas of long grass, rushes, and undergrowth.
• When out in the garden or bush land, wear long trousers and boots or other enclosed footwear that provides ankle coverage.
• Remove long grass and on-ground items from your home's exterior (such as corrugated iron) which may provide cover for snakes.
• Reduce mice numbers in and around your home.
