Notification of essential rail infrastructure maintenance work

Published on Thursday, 25 July 2024 at 10:32:10 AM

Arc Infrastructure will be conducting essential rail infrastructure maintenance work along the main East-West rail line between Northam and Midland, including through the Shire of Toodyay from Wednesday 31 July for approximately 2 months

The rail grinding is safety critical work which reduces the day-to-day wheel noise and sparks from the trains and prolongs rail life reducing the need for track replacement.  Arc Infrastructure has a Noise Management Plan in place with the condition to notify residents most affected by the proposed works and take all measures to minimise the impact.  Works will be carried out between scheduled train movements and will be constantly moving, expected to affect no property for more than 1 hour.

The works require a rail-bound rail grinder to operate on sections of the network to improve the condition of the track. Due to potential fire risk from grinding, Arc has planned to carry out these works in winter and during night shift between 6pm to 6am where dew and visibility allows for greater fire control and mitigation.

Arc anticipate minimal disturbance to residents in proximity to the rail corridor as the grinder moves throughout the night shift and endeavour to do all rail works in Townsite areas before 12:00am or during daytime shutdowns of the metro rail line.
