Refurbished Morangup Basketball Court On The Way Thanks to Local Teen

Due to the dedicated efforts of a local family, Morangup Community Centre’s much-loved but worn out basketball half court will receive a facelift in the near future.

As part of a Year 9 school project, Morangup’s Frank Vinton – an avid basketballer and regular court user – took on the challenge of having the space refurbished, recognising that a revitalised surface and equipment would have big benefits for his community.

Starting out by talking to the Shire President, Frank and his mum Donna then worked with Shire staff to develop a plan. Frank surveyed the community to gauge opinions, and the results supported his thinking that a new and improved court would be used more often by local youth and be a boost for volunteers based at the Community Centre.

Next, Frank, Donna and the Shire’s Community Development Officer joined forces and identified the Stronger Communities Program as an ideal grant opportunity. Backed by strong support from locals and volunteer organisations, Donna submitted an application to the program via Morangup Progress Association (MPA) which was successful – with the court’s refurbishment to commence in the coming weeks (just waiting on some fine weather).

Congratulations to Frank and everybody else who played a part in this project.

Daryl, Chair of the MPA, congratulates Frank on his efforts in
securing the Stronger Communities Program grant funding.
